This means that Americans across the country are still paying far more for basic necessities like food, rent, and utilities with those from low-income families particularly affected.

Moreover, since the pandemic first broke out in 2020, Americans have become more dependent on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), to meet their nutritional needs.

Formerly known as Food Stamps, SNAP benefits provide funds to low-income families through the use of an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card to purchase groceries and other food items.

What is Calfresh?

In California, SNAP benefits have basically been renamed CALFresh.

The program, like SNAP, is designed to help low-income residents meet their daily nutritional requirements by providing them with access to cheap, healthy food.

Who qualifies for CalFresh?

According to the Benefits.gov website, the following is a list of criteria that are required to be met in order to be eligible for CalFresh benefits:

  • Have a current bank balance (savings and checks combined) of less than $2,001, or;
  • You have a current bank balance (savings and checks combined) of less than $3,001 and your household shares any of the following:
  • A person or persons who are 60 years of age or older
  • A person with special needs (a child, your spouse, a parent, or yourself).

Furthermore, to be eligible, a person must have an annual income of at least $17,667 before taxes with an additional $6,136 specified for each additional family member.

Penalty for failure to report income

According to Reporting Changes For CalWorkss and CALFresh, individuals who do not report their income and receive higher benefits must repay the fringe benefits they receive on income they did not report.

The form also states that failure to report in order to obtain better benefits is fraud and violators may face jail time.
